Uracil is a pyrimidine nucleotide that replaces thymine in the process of transcribing DNA into RNA. Besides this fundamental function, Uracil is also known for its use in the anticancer drug 5-fluorouracil: when combined with fluorine, uracil can block RNA synthesis in cancerous cells. Within a lab setting, Uracil is also used as a void marker in reverse-phase HPLC columns.
